Minimum units, pack multiples and a minimum basket value are different rules. A dealer portal should explain which one applies before the buyer reaches the final step.
A product may be sold in packs while the order also needs to reach a basket threshold. Showing both conditions early makes the purchasing process easier to understand.
Define each rule separately
- Minimum quantity for a product
- Permitted pack multiple
- Minimum order value
- Approved exceptions for a dealer group
For example, a minimum of three units is different from ordering in multiples of six. These are illustrative numbers, not suggested limits. Agree precedence when several rules apply.
Explain the sales unit
Show whether the quantity and displayed price refer to an item, pack or case. Make the minimum, increment and any special-quote route visible on the product page.
When different units appear in one basket, review whether the quantities and totals remain understandable.
Write actionable messages
Instead of “Order failed”, explain the correction required. A pack-multiple message should state the allowed increment. If the interface adjusts quantity, the buyer must clearly see the new quantity and total.
Keep the rule consistent on product, basket and mobile screens. Do not hide the relevant warning away from the action it explains.
Test boundary cases
- Just below and exactly at the minimum
- A quantity outside the pack multiple
- Removing an item and falling below the threshold
- Stock below the minimum
- Different dealer groups viewing the same product
A stock shortage should not cause the interface to suggest an impossible order. Do not assume every portal has these features built in; demonstrate your actual requirements during the scope discussion.
Common questions
Is a minimum the same as a multiple?
No. One sets a lower boundary, the other defines permitted increments.
Can a dealer group have an exception?
That depends on the software. Test precedence explicitly.
