What Should a Website Show When Search Finds No Results?

A no-results page should not leave a visitor in a dead end. Show the query, active filters and a useful next action.

No result does not always mean the content is absent. A spelling difference, alternative terminology or narrow filter can produce the same screen.

Include the essentials

  • The safely displayed search phrase
  • An editable search field
  • Visible active filters
  • A route to clear or broaden filters
  • A relevant category or enquiry option

Do not imply that the site supports corrections or suggestions it cannot actually provide. A clear category link can be more useful than an inaccurate automated suggestion.

Distinguish filter mismatch from absence

A product may exist without matching the selected colour, size or category. Let the user change filters without unnecessarily losing the original query.

Review the mobile layout as well. Active filters should be discoverable, rather than hidden behind an unexplained empty list.

Use accurate wording

A technical search failure is different from a valid search returning no matches. Do not hide an outage behind a message asking the visitor to choose better words.

A useful no-results message might suggest a shorter phrase or clearing filters. Offer only relevant routes that actually exist.

Test representative queries

  1. Exact product or service names
  2. Common alternative wording
  3. A spelling error
  4. Restrictive filter combinations
  5. Truly unavailable content
  6. Language-specific characters

This does not assume every search engine has synonym or correction support. The test identifies current behaviour and concrete improvement needs.

Interpret search data carefully

Repeated failed queries may suggest missing content or unfamiliar terminology. Avoid broad conclusions from a few searches. Queries may contain personal information, so consider collection and access limits.

Common questions

Should every failed search redirect home?

That usually loses context. Preserve the search and offer a relevant next step.

Should every typo be corrected automatically?

Only if the feature exists and its relevance has been tested.
