Face Recognition

Does Sunlight Affect Face Recognition Cameras? A Kiosk Lighting Guide

A kiosk that works well in the morning may struggle in the afternoon at the same location. Changing window light can leave a face dark or overexposed. Assess lighting through the camera’s view of the face, rather than only how pleasant the room looks to the eye.

1. Avoid strong windows behind the person

Bright backlighting can make the camera expose for the background rather than the face. Inspect the live kiosk image. If the face appears dark, consider changing the device position or where the person stands. Try a controlled placement change instead of repeatedly testing the same angle in direct sunlight.

2. Compare light on both sides of the face

Strong light on one side and deep shade on the other can make capture harder. A blind or a more diffused placement may help in the right environment. If additional lighting is needed, choose a solution that avoids uncomfortable glare at eye level. Ask the installation team about device-specific settings.

3. Test morning and afternoon conditions

A test made only at installation time may miss daylight changes. Check periods when sunlight reaches the entrance, open and closed doors, and cloudy conditions. Using the same test person at the same distance improves comparison. Keep a short observation record of when the image changes.

4. Separate screen glare from camera exposure

Tablet reflections can prevent students from comfortably positioning themselves in the frame. Assess this separately from captured facial image quality. Check the live frame first and screen readability second. Increasing display brightness alone does not remove backlighting entering the camera.

5. Do not hide poor images by changing thresholds

Avoid casually relaxing recognition rules to compensate for difficult capture. Address position, lighting and lens cleanliness first. If a camera fault or software setting remains possible, describe the conditions to support. Unnecessary personal images are not required simply to explain when and where the problem appears.
