How to Reduce Entrance Queues: Planning Face Recognition Kiosk Flow

A morning queue does not always mean recognition itself is slow. Concentrated arrivals, unclear standing positions or one difficult enrollment record can block the flow. Identify the step where waiting occurs before changing the entrance process.

1. Measure peak minutes, not just enrollment

Two hundred arrivals over an hour create a different load from the same arrivals over five minutes. Observe several normal days. Note arrival counts, the longest queue and approximate waiting time. Do not treat one exceptional day as representative.

2. Identify the source of waiting

Are students unsure where to stand, is the camera feed delayed, or is the confirmation prompt being missed? Each cause needs a different response. If delays affect only unrecognized students, prioritize enrollment checks. If everyone is affected, review placement, devices and connectivity together.

3. Make the standing position clear

Mark an appropriate distance from the camera. Students should be able to see the result, while those waiting stay outside the recognition area. Use short, clear guidance. Keep device placement away from door movement and emergency routes.

4. Provide a separate support workflow

Plan a suitable staff-check point so one difficult recognition does not block the entire queue. Do not leave the student unrecorded; verify identity and entry through the institutional process. Establish a rule that prevents hurried approval of the wrong name.

5. Base a second kiosk on measurements

An additional device helps only when the bottleneck is understood. Verify software support, placement and record handling with the provider. Two devices do not automatically halve waiting times. Test them during actual peak demand.

6. Compare under similar conditions

After changing placement or guidance, measure comparable days and times. Review missing records, incorrect confirmations and staff intervention alongside waiting time. A faster-looking flow that produces record errors is not a successful improvement.
